Music For Kids
04.13.04 (12:26 pm)   [edit]
A just received a nice comment (via tBlog - c'mon Blogger!!) about the musical upbringing of my kids - much appreciated. The wife and I are trying to instill in our kids an enjoyment of good music regardless of the genre. So, for example, even Black Sabbath is acceptable because "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is a damn good album. We haven't noticed the kids piercing anything because of it either. On the flip of this works by Madonna or Britney Spears are excluded because musically a bowel movement has more talent though less visual appeal. Selected rap and hiphop are in as is some country and easy listening. The key is musicality. Is it enjoyable? Singable? Or random noise or screeching?

And the music isn't limited to American or British groups. We've heard good catchy stuff from India, Mexico, Germany, Sweden...

Good music is good music. Ya know it when you hear it and, remember, I'm the final judge because I have direct link to God (see previous posts).

Now for the little blighters a nice Politically Correct Christian hymn...or some Shaggs...

Thankfully, my kids also have good taste in music. My son likes old school funk, my youngest daughter likes a little hip hop, and my oldest daughter prefers either a slight punk edge or something soulful, like the Counting Crows. We all think that one of the best songs to drive to is Another One Bites the Dust.

I agree with you on Britney Spears. I refuse to buy her stuff, not because she is too slutty, but because she has no talent. The same holds true for boy bands. What are they? I mean, you could teach a bunch of monkeys to dress alike and perform monotonous dance steps.
