DNA and Mormons
02.16.06 (5:49 pm)   [edit]
L.A. Times had a story today about how DNA tests are showing that Mormons, for the most part, aren't descended from the right part of the world to be considered descended from a lost tribe of Israel. Naturally they're in a panic to make sense of it. Instead of saying that their founder might have made a mistake in genealogy, my guess is that they will rationalize their dogma with something like:

  • The science behind the DNA tests is wrong, wrong, wrong. Of course, they won't be able to prove it. They'll just act like I.D. folks and repeat the mantra hoping it becomes true.
  • The lost tribe that they are descended from was really lost so the DNA tests can't say either way, though, of course, neither can they but that's besides the point.
  • They will just ignore the whole thing and hope in this Internet Age that the results disappear.
  • Barring lack of disappearing results, they will threaten (sue) anyone posting such results, claiming that the information is libelous. This is sort of the Scientology/deep pockets way of resolving disputes.

Personally, I'd like to see more evidence be brought out that questions the basis of most, if not all, religions. Maybe that will get the blood-hungry preachers to realize they have no basis for their screeching. Maybe if people can see that it is not our religious beliefs that make us special but our humanity, that we all have our own unique thoughts and that a group of people with similar thoughts does not make them more special because they believe their thoughts have Divine backing.
