Lakers Epitaph
06.16.04 (8:06 am)   [edit]
Game 5: It was over before tip-off when it was announced that Karl Malone wouldn't suit up. The one Laker who deserved a ring because of sheer desire and work ethic could barely walk and as it turned out the rest of the Lakers - the ones who could play - could barely run. That the Lakers got blown out wasn't a big shock. All Detroit had to do was keep Kobe and Shaq in check and watch the other Lakers miss threes and fuddle around.

What's funny or sad is that if this were any other team their accomplishment of getting to the Finals would be applauded. Consider the injuries during the year and The Court Case. Consider the opponents in the Playoffs - Houston with Yao Ming, San Antonio - the defending champs with Duncan, Minnesota with Garnett the MVP - a gauntlet unlike any other. For any team to survive that run and end up in the Finals should be held in awe.

But this is the Lakers. The moment they announced the signing of Malone and Payton the expectations were nothing less than the Championship and they almost did it. Despite the injuries, the feuds, the scrowl, the lack of triangle - they almost did it. But Detroit showed what it takes to win - teamwork, hard work, attention, desire, and focus. Congratulations to Detroit and next year we'll see them again - same time, same place, different outcome.

I was rooting for the Pistons! The Lakers are like the Yankees in baseball. I just have to root against them no matter who they are playing.

just like the radio stations out here, it sounds like you are not giving credit to the better team. Detroit won 5 games to 0, and was outscored in 4. I personally have a history of rooting for the West. Could not do it this year. Enjoy the fact that the Lakers made the finals. It was a tough run (Rockets matched up well against them), but also, remember that the first of the 3 Laker titles was won when Duncan was hurt and could not defend his title. If you want to bring up injuries, then I could use the same thing saying Dirk went down vs. Spurs last year in West finals and Mavs should have won. Injuries are not excuses. Good teams are deep and have backup players who fill in.

good luck in '05

I did give credit to the Pistons in the final paragraph. It just got lost in my despair over the Lakers playing like Flakers.

Detroit sent a variety of messages: Defense can win. Superstars aren't vital to winning. Basketball is a team sport.

I hope Jackson doesn't bail. It'd look like sour grapes. I'd like to see him coach a team with Shaq and a good supporting cast to the Finals and his 10th Championship.

regarding your last comment:
send Shaq to Dallas along with Phil!! That would be a 10th title. Nash, Dirk, Shaq, and Daniels.
You can have anyone but Dirk.
Shaq for Finley, Jamison & Walker? LOL. NBA rocks.

No,no,no. Keep Shaq (and Phil) - he's irreplaceable. Get rid of Kobe and get...Tracy McGrady?!? or another high school draft pick...
